Qualcomm Snapdragon is now as a "Platform" not a processor

Qualcomm announced that it will be making some branding changes to its Snapdragon chip-sets. From now on, they'll be called 'platforms' instead of processors.

Snapdragon is more than a single component, a piece of silicon, or what many would misinterpret as the CPU. It is an anthology of technology, comprising hardware, software, and services that are not fully captured in a word.

So that

Company says that the word 'processor' doesn't accurately reflect what's included in a Snapdragon chip-set, which is really a system on a chip (SoC). An SoC does not just include a CPU. It is also bundled with support for Quick Charge technology, Wi-Fi touch controllers, fingerprint technology, and more. Indeed, there are many different parts - both hardware and software that go into one of Qualcomm's chip-sets.

But that's not the only branding change that the firm is making, the Snapdragon 200-series of chip-sets won't be called Snapdragon anymore at all. Instead, they will come under the Qualcomm Mobile brand, reserving the Snapdragon name for premium platforms, which apparently include the 400-series and up.

The kind of sudden shift is not seismic, but we believe it is a step in the right direction and that it will help us better demonstrate the overall value of a chip, beyond “speeds and feeds.” It better acknowledges those who have done extensive work on the entire platform, and key acquisitions that Qualcomm Technologies has made to bolster its position in the semiconductor industry.

We believe it will also help our customers better demonstrate the overall value that Qualcomm Mobile and Qualcomm Snapdragon technologies bring to their products. As we expand our presence outside of mobile, we want our nomenclature to reflect all the places we are making a difference, from mobile PCs and servers, to automotive, IP cameras, drones, Virtual reality /Augumented reality headsets, and beyond. the company believe that this is the initial step for their developement.
